Dear member of the press,
In spite of the current high butter prices, they still dip very often to painful lows – the prices paid to producers for a litre of milk. As recent cost studies from the five largest milk-producing countries in the EU show, production costs are nowhere near covered by these prices.
This is due to the absence of a crisis instrument in the EU Common Agricultural Policy; the absence of a volume reduction programme that could kick in during crises when production outstrips market uptake.
In a highly symbolic demonstration on 26.10.2017, the dairy farmers of the European Milk Board (EMB) will call on EU policy makers to include an article on voluntary production cuts during crises in the CAP.
We would like to invite you to the following events on 26.10.2017:
10:00 Press conference
to present recent cost studies from 5 major milk-producing countries (France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark)
In the presence of: Dr. Karin Jürgens (BAL) as well as EMB Executive Committee members
Venue: Residence Palace, Room Passage, Rue de la Loi 155, 1040 Brussels
11:00 Symbolic demonstration
"Stripped to the bone - higher butter prices do not end misery in the dairy sector"
In the presence of: Milk-producer delegations from all over Europe
Venue: In front of the Berlaymont building, Rue de la Loi 200, 1040 Brussels
We look forward to seeing you at the events. The press conference will provide insight into the state of costs and prices in the European dairy sector, while the demonstration is sure to deliver striking, highly-symbolic images.
